Archival Consciousness was initiated by artist Mariana Lanari and graphic designer Remco van Bladel to collaborate with libraries and archives in cultural institutions. We work in close collaboration with archivists to implement methods and infrastructure to turn their collections into data. We are interested in the long term preservation and dissemination of physical archives, in connection with the digital archive. The digital component of archives, their databases, are the starting point of our work. We are developing a shared and community driven graph that acts as an interaction layer on top of the existing databases of libraries and archives. In this way, we bring linked-data aggregation to the application layer to facilitate discovery, browsing, and navigation through explorative features of graph algorithms.</description>

Texturing Matter: An Accessible Method of Creating Textures by Digital Subtractive Fabrication











In response to the growing interest in digital clay fabrication, this graduation thesis introduces TEXTURING MATTER, a simplified, accessible method that integrates traditional clay knowledge with digital manufacturing. Built on the multifunctional Zmorph CNC platform and custom Grasshopper software, the system bridges manual and digital practices by enabling a wide range of users—from traditional artisans to digital makers—to design and carve clay textures. It emphasizes the importance of understanding clay-specific knowledge, such as material properties and firing, which is often overlooked in existing research.

TEXTURING MATTER includes a hardware toolkit, parametric path-generation interface, and user guide. It focuses on three core variables: tools, materials, and machine paths. Users engage in iterative texture experimentation to build intuitive understanding and creative control. The method was further validated through an internship at Vertico, a concrete 3D printing firm, by adapting the system to larger-scale concrete printing and CNC milling. This demonstrated the method’s scalability and cross-material adaptability.

Ultimately, the project promotes digital craftsmanship, making decentralized digital making more inclusive and materially informed.

	To facilitate a clearer understanding of the foundational knowledge behind the digital subtractive fabrication process, the workflow is simplified into the diagram above.
The research includes two parts:(1) TEXTURING CLAY is the central focus of the research. It explores carving with a small-scale multi-functional CNC machine (Zmorph), using Grasshopper software I developed to carve clay along the design path.
(2) TEXTURING CONCRETE is the extension of TEXTURING CLAY. It investigates robotic arm milling as a method of renovation with VERTICO during my three-month internship.&#38;nbsp;

As someone attempting to learn from both traditional clay craftsmanship and digital fabrication, I have studied these seemingly different fields separately, yet gradually began to perceive their fundamental similarities—both embody complex and deeply embedded tacit knowledge, rely on the creator’s long-term hands-on engagement, and yet lack an integrated learning methodology.


I started to realize that “making fabrication more accessible and user-friendly” is the direction I want to pursue. To that end, I approach it from three perspectives:
(1) Organizing the processes I have learned into clear workflows, and conclude them in a clear booklet.(2) Inspired by the Material Driven Design(MDD) approach, keeping a material diary to document my material experiments, identify key parameters in carving practices, and record reflections.(3) Developing an intuitive Grasshopper-based design interface that enables users of different skill levels to explore carving possibilities simply by adjusting parameters.

	This research adopts and slightly modifies the DIY Pen Toolhead originally designed by creator Marcin Traczyk in the Zmorph community, using its structure to mount self-made carving tools. Considering that the pairing of carving tools and carving path can produce multiple dynamics and significantly influence the final texture, I chose to focus on designing the machine’s movement rather than the textures themselves.


I developed a Grasshopper-based slicer specifically for carving clay slabs. With this design platform, users can create texture designs by following these steps:
(1) Basic Setting: input the clay slab dimensions and desired carving depth;(2) select a carving tool;(3) design the texture;(4) preview the 2D and 3D texture patterns, as well as the combined effect of multiple tiles arranged together; finally, preview the tool’s carving process;(5) export the final G-code for the machine to carve.


The Grasshopper-based interface allows users to explore variations of texture simply by dragging parameters, lowering the barrier to design while expanding the space for creative exploration.

	In the final part, the collaborative project with Vertico aimed to reproduce and restore heritage components through cement printing and carving techniques, while further developing Vertico’s digital milling aesthetics. We studied the surface textures of components dismantled during the restoration of a church, and selected semi-cylindrical drill bits suited to replicate the texture quality for carving execution.


Through the process of learning and experimenting together with Vertico, I recognized the potential of adapting the same Grasshopper-based software system from clay to cement. I also came to understand that the design path itself is only a small part of the process—the real key lies in mastering and understanding the characteristics of different materials and machines to ensure that the method can be successfully implemented.

	Texturing Clay: An Accessible Method of Hardware
Hacking to Carve Clay with a Multifunctional CNC Machine











Imagine a ceramicist crafting a cup: they begin by taking a handful of clay, shaping it into a ball, wetting it with water, and using a pottery wheel to form the cup. Once partially dry, the artisan trims the edges using knifes and perhaps carves decorative patterns on the surface. After the cup is completely dry, it is coated with glaze and fired in a kiln and become the final cup. This requires the ceramicist to have a foundational understanding of the properties of clay, the skills of additive manufacturing (shaping) and subtractive manufacturing (refining), and knowledge of firing techniques. However, in transitioning to digital fabrication, the inherent complexity of these craft techniques is often simplified into two steps: computer-aided design and fabrication. And the comprehensive knowledge of the whole fabrication process is often overlooked. &#38;nbsp;

Over the past 30 years, the user base for digital fabrication has significantly expanded. As ceramic craftsmanship transitions from handmade to digital, CNC machines like 3D printers and robotic arms have emerged as key tools. Craft and machine are not inherently at odds. A central question for those exploring ceramic production through digital fabrication is: How can digital clay fabrication highlight the material's diversity across the spectrum of practices? Moreover, how can it incorporate a comprehensive understanding of clay’s properties, manufacturing processes, and firing techniques?

This research investigates the integrated use of a multifunctional CNC machine to create clay surface textures, aiming to support accessible distributed manufacturing. Could combining multiple fabrication processes in digital workflows foster greater awareness of clay's diverse practices? Additionally, what new possibilities might emerge to deepen practitioners' engagement with the material?

Making Tiles


a. Using a Cutter:To create a clay cutter, tie a wire to small holes on a wooden frame, ensuring tension with wrapping or screws. To shape clay into blocks for cutting, this study used two L-shaped molds. Wrap the clay in plastic, assemble the molds, and repeatedly slam to form a block. Finally, cut with the clay cutter. A base mold with grooves can help ensure evenly spaced slabs.











b. Using a Thick Paste Extruder:Using a syringe attachment on a multifunctional CNC machine, clay slabs can be 3D printed. The Zmorph machine supports a Thick Paste Extruder, and makers have modified entry-level 3D printers for this purpose, showing its feasibility. 3D printing ensures uniform slab thickness and easy color switching, with further exploration planned after the FMP(2025).

	Designing
Unlike traditional ceramists who use their hands and tools to carve directly into clay, digital fabrication machines rely on reading G-code to guide their movement for carving and milling. 
Inspired by MillPath, this study attempts to use Grasshopper to develop a design system that enables beginners to easily create and explore clay surface textures. The goal is to provide an accessible tool that balances the intuitiveness of design with the unique characteristics of handcrafted aesthetics.





















Considering the dynamic possibilities between
carving pens and carving movements, this study focuses on designing the
machine's movement paths rather than the carving patterns themselves.
Grasshopper, a flexible and visulaize software, is used as the design platform for this purpose.

Carving


a. Leather-dry Clay with Carving Tools:Leather-dry clay allows clear carving, as scraps fall off without sticking. This study used and adapted Marcin Traczyk’s DIY Pen Toolhead from the Zmorph community for carving. The toolhead, originally designed for 2D pen drawings, was modified for custom carving, offering possibilities similar to traditional ceramicists' tools

b. Full-dry Clay with CNC Milling: 
Fully dried clay, being brittle, requires higher driller speeds and lower movement speeds for CNC milling. This study modified the DIY Pen Toolhead and adapted Ahmeted’s Ender 3 engraving method to create a Zmorph-compatible milling module.

	Firing











Microwave kilns offer a studio-friendly, low-cost, and energy-efficient alternative. Research by Peng et al. shows microwave kilns can fire small pieces in 24 minutes compared to 8 hours in traditional kilns, with a tenfold energy cost reduction, making them ideal for independent creators.



This study used a SHARP R-879 Microwave oven (26L, 900W) with a microwave kiln (Ø12.5 × H4 cm). Essential preparations include high-temperature gloves, a thermocouple thermometer (up to 1000°C), and insulating bricks or small clay pieces. Ensure the pieces are fully dry, with at least 3–4 days of indoor drying, to prevent explosions during heating.


During firing, keep the area around the microwave oven clear as the exterior becomes hot. Position the piece on 2–3 insulating bricks at the kiln’s center for even heat distribution, cover the kiln, and add fire bricks to the vent holes. Cycle through five power levels (90W to 900W) at 5 minutes per level, totaling 35 minutes. After heating, slightly open the kiln, insert a fire brick, and use the thermometer to measure the temperature. Bisque firing requires at least 800°C, though results may vary by clay type.


Allow the kiln to cool naturally for one hour before removing the piece. Avoid rapid cooling to prevent cracks in the piece or kiln coating. Let the kiln cool for a full day after firing to preserve the interior coating's lifespan.

	Movement mediation machine to create “Repe-dynamic” material experience

Compared to the precise qualities made by machines, craftsmanship is a symbol of individuality and liveness. Each artifact made by hand is slightly flawed and imperfect, indicating uniqueness. Such dynamic quality comes from the body movement during craftsmanship. Even in the context of digital fabrication, researchers keep finding methods to bring such quality back to the machine-made process.

“The general rule of using machines is that if the human body is weak, the machine should assist it…The machine is an alienated human body, but they are not inhuman.” (Richard Sennet, 2008)&#38;nbsp;As we try to find the human qualities within digital fabrication, instead of merely going back to hand-made, it is crucial to ask: What is the specific value that emerges between human hands and machines? What qualities does it have that make it impossible to obtain with bare hands or digital fabrication machines? How should we position humans and machines in such a relationship?


















This study investigates the
intersection of hand-made and digital fabrication through experiments with clay
carving using various subtractive manufacturing methods, ranging from hand-made
to machine-made, with different levels of body engagement. These include
directly with hands, physical tools, movement mediation machines, and CNC
machines. A user test based on diary study was conducted to gather perspectives
on the experiential qualities of patterns and summarized the discussion through
qualitative analysis.

	Observation

Starting from finding a pattern in daily life. The pattern was found on the car window. It looks like puddles, with elongated depressions ranging from shallow to deep, with smooth edges. It is linear, parallel, continuous, with irregular tiny gaps.

Hand-made

Try to make the pattern with hands and tools. To recreate the puddle-like shapes, I use a metal ring and a string, and rotate it with centrifugal force. It leaves irregular oval-shaped pits on the surface of clay.

Machine-made

To make the comparison, I used Grasshopper to create a random oval-shaped pattern and execute it with Computer Numeric Control (CNC). Carved by a driller, the resulting clay pattern shows a stable quality without any human hand engagement. Yet due to the nature of clay, the detail crushed is slightly flawed which brings it a sense of nature.

What if, we integrate the body moment into a machine? “Movement mediation machine v1” was created based on the idea. By moving motors with my hands, it allows me to co-create patterns with the machine. It shows a stable linear pattern. If you try to rotate this pattern, you can see the shadow changes under light, which shows the directionality of the pattern carving.

I tried to reorient the metal ring during the process of carving. It helped me create chaotic patterns with a specific rhythm and different directions.

What if, we give more control to the machine? “Movement mediation machine v2” was created. Controlling the motors with code, it reduces the degree of human body intervention while giving the machine more space to control the movement. The final pattern produces a wave-like effect, with layers overlapping on each other, and the final form echoes the carving process.

To transform abstract language into practical basic data, this study taxonomy systematically through the Material-Driven Design (MDD) of Elvin Karana et al.’s study[1]. MDD evaluates materials not only by focusing on their physical properties, but also on their function, expressiveness, the reactions it cause in us, and the actions it prompts us to take.” A diary template is a tool to unfold the process systematically which adopted to push the research forwards with well recorded parameters and insights.

In this section, a user test based on a diary study is conducted to find a general perspective on the experiential
qualities of patterns with participants and their insight. The user test aimed
to explore: What are the experiential qualities of hand-made patterns,
machine-made patterns, and something in between? The full book can be found here.


















Pattern Experience Book As how we interpret terms could differ from people—for instance, when thinking of the word "warm", everyone may interpret it differently. To transform abstract language into generalized data, this study taxonomy systematically by the experiential quality categorization from material-driven design. In the “Pattern Experience Book”, the experiential qualities of hand-made and machine-made were listed respectively. The participants will fill in the check box with white color if they agree with the terms or not, or add their terms. 


Logbook To collect patterns of hand-made, machine-made, and something in between, participants will pick one term from the previous “Pattern Experience Book” that can describe the hand-made and machine-made respectively, and combine the terms into a sentence(e.g. geometric but elegant). They will find a corresponding pattern in daily life based on the terms and the sentences.

What is a hand-made pattern?"Slightly flawed" is a characteristic all agreed upon in the user test as experiential quality of handmade items. If we closely observe the horizontal and vertical, the unit sizes reveals inconsistencies. This makes such patterns relatively unpredictable."Time" or "traces" are other crucial factors. After an item has been used for a while, its texture develops handmade characteristics over time, even if it was initially machine-made, much like antiques or vintage items. 
However, the item needs to have been used by hand to acquire such quality. "Because even if something has been sitting somewhere for a long time, it might not have that feeling. It needs to be used by human hands, just like a true handmade item." When distinguishing between handmade and machine-made patterns, the definition of handmade is relatively ambiguous for most people. Participants even classified natural textures as handmade. "Normally I tell whether a material is not machine-made or it's machine-made. I don’t actually pick one that’s human-made but I kind of cancel the question by whether it’s machine-made or not."

















What is a machine-made pattern?"Repetition" is a common feature of machine-made textures. The shapes of the textures are very neat, the lines are perfectly straight, and they are highly consistent, with no visible differences between hundreds of repeated patterns to the naked eye—such textures are predictable.


Additionally, participants mentioned using "human power" as a criterion for judgment. "If it far exceeds human capabilities, then I would consider it a machine-made pattern," one participant explained. "I would say that what is meant by exceeding human power here is more like exceeding my own capabilities or as an average for all human beings. There are certain materials that you couldn’t really replicate with both of my hands and the knowledge or technologies I have in my mind, then I will assume it is beyond my or average human power."

What is a in-between pattern?Participants indicated that they find it difficult to categorize textures as "in-between." However, when they have both machine-made and handmade textures as references, they find it easier to identify patterns that fall between the two.


In my exploration of all the carved textures, the patterns made by CNC were considered the most in-between. Participants liked this texture the most because it was difficult to guess how it was made. "If you didn’t tell me. I think it’s interesting enough to lead at least me or potentially any other audiences to think it’s quite sensual even a machine could do this. But it is also quite accurate in a way for human to do this. It kind of meets the criteria of right in the middle. I would expect the machine to be a little bit sensual and I want humans to be more precise. So it is in between." In summary, machine-made textures with a touch of sensibility or precise handmade textures can be considered in-between.

Aqua-Morph: A Design Method for Fabricating Shape-Changing Hydrogel Structures























Soft robotic actuators can create new uses and
expressions for tangible and embodied interaction. Hydrogels, popular in soft
robotics for their reversible shape-changing properties, often require
technical expertise and specialized laboratories for fabrication, limiting
rapid iteration. Additionally, aesthetic and form-giving qualities important to
designers are often overlooked. We presents Aqua-Morph, an
accessible design method for fabricating 3D-printed hydrogel-based structures
that self-actuate in water. 
Our contributions are twofold: 
(1) a DESIGN MANUAL outlining the fabrication pipeline using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D
printing with digitally adaptable parameters for creating flexible actuators,
and (2) a TANGIBLE MOVEMENT LIBRARY of shape-changing hydrogel structures to
empower designers, creative roboticists, material scientists and engineers in
creating tangible interactions.

︎︎︎TEXTURE EXPERIMENT











We use Sodium polyacrylate (SPA), commonly found in everyday products like instant snow (powder) and decorative plant displays (beads). We observed that SPA hydrogel beads swell reversibly by absorbing water through sodium ions in the polymer. As shown in picture, the bead diameter increased from 2 mm (1) to 10mm, five times their size after 3 hours in water (2). Although the beads are elastic, they are fractured under compression from a rigid structure (3) and dehydrate reversibly back to their original size within 60 minutes and a week by a dehydrator and room temperature respectively (4).&#38;nbsp;

The Design Manual offers a
streamlined, easily replicable fabrication process using tools common in maker
spaces. It requires a single FDM 3D printer and readily available materials
like TPU filament and hydrogel beads. When placed in water, the beads expand, causing
the printed object to bend, twist, and stretch.

	To
design hydrogel actuators, use CAD software to create the actuator shape with
an internal channel structure and seal it with a constraint layer. Model the
top and bottom channel layers separately and export as a 3mf file. Import these
into Super Slicer,
right-click to select "infill" and "perimeters shells," set
solid layers to zero, maintain one perimeter, and choose an 80-90% dense
rectilinear infill for a porous layer for liquid entry and hydrogel bead
encapsulation.



We
recommend FDM 3D printers with standard nozzle sizes of 0.4 mm or 0.6 mm.
Selecting the right filament is crucial for achieving the desired motion. An
85A hardness TPU filament is ideal due to its balance between flexibility and
printability.



Super
Slicer supports inserting a pause command into the g-code file. Use the layer
overview slide bar, right-click to select “add pause print” ensuring the pause
occurs before printing the top layer. At
the designated pause, manually insert hydrogel beads into the actuator, ensuring
careful placement and distribution within the channel structure.&#38;nbsp;On completion, resume the&#38;nbsp;printing with&#38;nbsp;the specified infill pattern. Finally, submerge the actuator in water and record the
actuation time on video. Record the findings in the diary after full
actuation and classify the final movement.

The Tangible Movement Library showcases
eight foundational movements: popping, expanding, elongating, bending, waving,
twisting, rotating, and gripping. The movement performance of an actuator depends on the design of the channel structures that encapsulate the hydrogel. The choice and combination of connection and constraint plays a vital role in form variation. Our&#38;nbsp;study identified several insights that contribute to the varying efficacy of different actuator designs:&#38;nbsp;(1) Connections between the structures enhance the actuator's performance.(2) The shared surface can serve as a constraint for movements.
(3) The sidewall with the greatest surface area experiences the highest
force, resulting in the most sizable extension.
(4) Larger
actuators produce stronger movements. 


(5) Designs may
include multiple channels, where isolated hydrogel-filled sections exert pressure on each other.

	Our mixed-method Research through Design (RtD) and Material Driven Design (MDD) approach emphasizes systematic experimentation, incorporating diary templates for recording parameters and ensuring reproducible outcomes. Design Manual provides a step-by-step guide that empowers users with basic CAD and FDM printing skills to design, slice, and print actuators, democratizing the process and enabling customization. 
By exploring both the fabrication challenges and the aesthetic sensibilities in soft robotics, our approach creates a more integrated and holistic design process for tangible and embodied interactions. Aqua-Morph's Tangible Movement Library, based on Brocker’s [1] actuator movement categories, values aesthetic perspectives and encourages free-form exploration. 
Additionally, playfulness can bridge abstract concepts and their practical applications. Modular design serves as a free agency to encourage a playful learning experience , which facilitates the exploration of variations, enabling researchers to test different geometric configurations and observe their effects on movement. 
This low-cost, accessible, and reproducible DIY approach uses readily available hydrogel beads. Aqua-Morph aims to enhance the Design-HCI soft actuator toolbox, inspiring researchers to explore modular configurations, aesthetics, and emerging responsive materials.[1]&#38;nbsp;
